Node.js in production: scalability, performance and resilience
Understand the runtime in depth to build services that stay fast and available under real load.

Expected outcomes for your teams and business
What the training concretely changes, beyond the classroom:
-
More reliable services
Services are designed for real load and real failures, not only for the happy path.
-
Controlled infrastructure costs
Understanding where time and memory go avoids scaling problems away with more servers.
-
Faster diagnosis
Profiling and observability skills cut the time from alert to root cause.
-
A better user experience
Lower and more stable response times, felt directly by your users.
Learning objectives
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Explain how the event loop, libuv and the thread pool really work
- Identify and fix what blocks the event loop
- Choose the right concurrency tool: async I/O, worker threads or processes
- Apply resilience patterns: timeout, retry with backoff, circuit breaker, bulkhead, rate limiting
- Use caching effectively and avoid its classic traps
- Run Node.js services reliably in containers (signals, graceful shutdown, health checks)
Audience
- Backend and full-stack developers working with Node.js
- Tech leads and SREs operating Node.js services
Prerequisites
- Professional experience with JavaScript or TypeScript on Node.js
- Basic knowledge of HTTP and Docker is a plus
Programme
-
Module 1 Inside the runtime
- V8, libuv and the event loop phases
- Blocking vs non-blocking I/O
- Microtasks, macrotasks and execution order
- The thread pool and its limits
-
Module 2 Asynchrony and concurrency
- Callbacks, Promises and async/await, and their pitfalls
- Concurrency vs parallelism
- Bounding concurrency and handling backpressure
- Resource management and cancellation
-
Module 3 Performance
- Profiling CPU and memory
- Detecting event loop lag
- Worker threads for CPU-bound work
- Caching strategies, invalidation and eviction
-
Module 4 Resilience patterns
- Timeouts everywhere
- Retry with exponential backoff and jitter
- Circuit breaker and bulkhead
- Rate limiting and load shedding
-
Module 5 Running in production
- Containers, PID 1 and signal handling
- Graceful shutdown and health checks
- Configuration, logging and observability
- A production-readiness checklist
Teaching approach
Around 70% hands-on. Concepts are demonstrated live, then explored through exercises: measuring an event loop under load, breaking a service on purpose and making it resilient, profiling a real bottleneck. Participants leave with the exercises, their solutions, the slides and a production-readiness checklist.
Tailored to your context
Before the session, a short call helps me understand your services, your infrastructure and the problems you meet in production. Exercises can then target your own bottlenecks and incidents. In coaching format, we work directly on your services over several weeks.
Let's talk about your needs
